Move your library to a new laptop in Rekordbox, step by step.
Two things have to arrive on the new machine: the database, which holds your playlists, cues, beatgrids, and analysis, and the audio files themselves. There are two supported ways to transfer Rekordbox library to another computer, and the backup file is the one to start with.
Back up the library on the old laptop
Open Rekordbox on the old machine, click [File] > [Library] > [Backup Library], then click [OK]. Rekordbox asks [Do you want to back up music files as well?]. Choose [Yes] when you are migrating, because that is what carries the audio, into a [rekordbox_bak] folder alongside the database. Pick a save location with room to spare and click [Save]. You get [Collection was backed up.] when it finishes.
Copy the backup and its rekordbox_bak folder to a drive
Put the backup file, which has the current date appended to its name, and the [rekordbox_bak] folder side by side on an external drive. Restore only finds your music files when that folder sits at the same path as the backup data, so keep the pair together and do not rename either one. A large collection takes a while to copy, so start it the night before.
Install Rekordbox and sign in on the new laptop
Download the current installer from rekordbox.com and sign in with the same AlphaTheta account so your plan comes back with you. Install before you restore, not after. An older backup is still usable: Rekordbox can restore .edb backup data written by older versions, and a backup made on a Mac restores on Windows and the other way round.
Restore the library
Connect the drive, then click [File] > [Library] > [Restore Library] and click [OK]. Select the backup data, which is a .zip or an .edb file, and click [Open]. Rekordbox replaces the present data with the backup and shows [Collection was restored.] when it is done. On a big collection this takes a while, so let it run without clicking around in the app.
Relocate anything marked with an exclamation point
If the audio landed in a different folder than it lived in before, those tracks show [!] in [Collection]. Open [Preferences] > [Advanced] > [Database] > [Auto Relocate Search Folders], tick [Music], click [User specified folders] and [Add] the folder your music now lives in. Then click [File] > [Display All Missing Files] and hit [Auto Relocate]. Anything still listed after that was not found on this computer.
Or move Rekordbox database to new computer via an external drive
Rekordbox can keep its master database somewhere other than the internal disk. Open [Preferences] > [Advanced] > [Database] > [Database management] and select the master database you want to use. When the master database is transferred to an external device, the analyzed files go with it, so that one drive gives you the same library on either computer.
Re-export your USB before the next gig
The drive you play from does not update itself. In EXPORT mode, connect the USB, then drag the playlists you need from [Collection] onto the device under [Devices] and let the progress bar at the bottom finish. Eject the device from inside Rekordbox before you unplug it, because for some players that is when the library on the drive gets written.
The catch
Restore Library replaces the library on the new machine rather than merging with it, so anything you already imported there is gone once it finishes. If both machines hold tracks you care about, back up the new laptop's library first and restore the bigger collection second.
