Vibes is live
How to · Rekordbox

Use Sync Manager in Rekordbox.

Sync Manager mirrors the playlists you tick from your collection onto a USB stick or SD card, and re-exports only what changed the next time you plug it in. It also runs the other way, returning cue points, beat positions and ratings you set on the player. You will only see it while EXPORT is selected, at the bottom of the Media Browser.

Vibes All Songs library with playlists, BPM, key and rating columns

The playlists you tick in Sync Manager are only as good as the library behind them.

Use Sync Manager in Rekordbox, step by step.

Sync Manager in rekordbox is a mirror, not a copy button: you tick which playlists a device should carry, and every sync makes that device match. Here is where it sits, how to run it in both directions, and which library format your players actually read.

01

Switch to EXPORT mode

Open the mode selector in the upper-left of the screen and choose [EXPORT]. Sync Manager belongs to that mode only. Outside EXPORT mode, rekordbox hides the icon completely, which is why DJs who live in PERFORMANCE mode assume the feature was dropped. Switching modes changes nothing in your collection, so you can move back and forth freely.

02

Plug the drive in and open the Sync Manager window

Insert a USB storage device or an SD memory card into your computer. Click the Sync Manager icon at the bottom of the Media Browser, the panel that lists [Collection], [Playlists], [Devices] and the rest. The [SYNC MANAGER] window opens, with your rekordbox playlists on one side and the connected device on the other.

03

Select your device inside the window

Double-click [Device] in the Sync Manager window, then pick your drive by name. The playlists already on that device are listed. If the drive is not offered, rekordbox cannot write to it: NTFS and plain HFS are unsupported. Use FAT32 for the widest player compatibility, or exFAT only if every player you touch supports it.

04

Tick Synchronize playlists with a device

Click the [Synchronize playlists with a device] checkbox, then check each playlist the drive should carry. This is a standing choice rather than a one-off copy: the ticked set defines what that device holds from now on. Leave a playlist unticked and it simply stays out of the mirror.

05

Run the sync

Click the arrow beside [Device]. Every ticked playlist is exported to the device in its latest state, and the track information inside those playlists is refreshed at the same time. AlphaTheta's manual names the same arrow for sending playlists out and for pulling player edits back, so watch the window rather than assuming a direction.

06

Pull cues, beat positions and ratings back after the gig

Plug the synced drive back in, open the window, select the device and click the arrow beside [Device]. Cue points, beat positions and ratings you changed on the player are sent back into your collection. Right-clicking the device in the tree view and choosing [Update Collection] does the same job. Tracks exported from another computer, or deleted from [Collection], are skipped.

07

Convert the drive to OneLibrary if you play on newer gear

Exporting writes a database on the stick. Older players read the traditional Device Library, while the CDJ-3000X browses a stick only when it also carries OneLibrary, formerly Device Library Plus. Rekordbox 7 then adds later exports to both databases, so right-click [OneLibrary] under your device and choose [Convert from Device Library] first. AlphaTheta lists the same step for the CDJ-1500X, OPUS-QUAD, OMNIS-DUO, XDJ-AZ and XDJ-AN.

The catch

Sync Manager mirrors only the playlists you ticked, so a track you dropped into an unticked playlist never reaches the stick. Its second half, the iTunes playlist sync, is documented for Windows and for macOS before Catalina only, because Apple removed the iTunes service that rekordbox reads.

Where Vibes fits

Cleaner playlists before Sync Manager mirrors them.

Vibes does not touch USB sticks, CDJs or Sync Manager. It works one step earlier: it imports your rekordbox library, lets you tag and sort it properly, then exports the finished playlists back into rekordbox as a folder tree. What you tick in Sync Manager is then already the set you meant to carry.

See how it works
Import Wizard reads your existing rekordbox library, plain folders, and other DJ apps
Auto-Tagging and Vibe Sort turn a flat collection into vibes you can pick a set from
Set Designer with Energy Flow orders a set before it ever becomes a playlist
Export sends finished playlists back into rekordbox; the USB step stays inside rekordbox

Organize in Vibes, export to Rekordbox.

Your playlists, tags, ratings, and cue points travel back to the gear you play on, so nothing you do in Vibes is locked away.

Frequently asked questions

The honest answers, including the trade-offs.

At the bottom of the Media Browser, the panel listing [Collection], [Playlists] and [Devices], and only while [EXPORT] is chosen in the upper-left mode selector. Nearly every report of a rekordbox sync manager not showing turns out to be PERFORMANCE mode, or a Media Browser that has been hidden. A rekordbox sync manager greyed out usually means no supported device is connected yet, so plug the drive in first, then open the window.
Four moves: choose [EXPORT] in the upper-left, click the Sync Manager icon under the Media Browser, tick [Synchronize playlists with a device] and check your playlists, then click the arrow beside [Device]. The window has looked much the same since version 6. If yours does not match the steps above, run [Help] > [rekordbox update manager], or reinstall from the rekordbox download page.
Three different things carry the word sync. Beat SYNC on the deck matches tempo and phase between players and never touches your library. Sync Manager mirrors playlists onto a USB stick or SD card, and only appears once you select EXPORT. There is also Cloud Library Sync, which keeps one library in step across your own devices through cloud storage. This page covers the middle one.
Work through the chain. The [Synchronize playlists with a device] box has to be ticked, the playlists themselves have to be checked, and the arrow beside [Device] has to be clicked. Automatic syncing only fires when you start rekordbox and then click the device in the tree view, so nothing happens if the app was already open. Most reports of a rekordbox sync manager not working are one of those three.
Three documented blockers. Tracks from streaming services cannot be exported to a USB storage device or SD memory card at all. Missing files stop an export: choose [Display All Missing Files] from the [File] menu, then use [Auto Relocate] in the [Missing File Manager] window. A drive rekordbox cannot write to, NTFS for example, looks a lot like rekordbox not loading tracks onto it. Start by relocating missing files.
Two routes. For a one-off, right-click a playlist in the tree view and choose [Export Playlist], which copies the audio and writes the device database. For a drive you reuse every week, Sync Manager is better: tick the playlists once, and every later sync brings that device level with your collection. Full walkthrough: export a playlist to USB.
Usually the wrong library format for the player. In rekordbox, Device Library Plus is the old name for what AlphaTheta now calls OneLibrary, and the CDJ-3000X only browses a stick that carries it. Convert the drive with [Convert from Device Library] and the playlists appear. If no player reads the stick at all, check the file system instead: FAT32 is the safe choice, and exFAT works on a short list of models.
Use the library backup, not a USB stick. On the old machine choose [File] > [Library] > [Backup Library], and answer yes when it offers to include your music files. On the new machine choose [Restore Library] and open the .zip or .edb file. A backup made on Mac restores on Windows and the other way round. See setting up a new laptop.
They export from their DJ app instead of dragging files in Finder or Explorer. The app copies the audio and writes a database beside it holding playlists, cue points, beatgrids and waveforms, which is what the player actually reads. Format the stick FAT32 first, keep one stick per gig, and carry a spare. More on that in prepare a USB for a gig.
No. Searches like rekordbox not responding Mac, rekordbox not opening Windows 11, rekordbox not opening Windows 10 or rekordbox 6 not opening are startup faults, and the fix lives in AlphaTheta's troubleshooting FAQ rather than in a rekordbox 6.8.6 download. Rekordbox not playing through speakers and rekordbox PC MASTER OUT not working are audio device settings, while rekordbox link not working means PRO DJ LINK over LAN. AlphaTheta runs rekordbox support through the Inquiries form on rekordbox.com, and publishes no rekordbox support phone number.
