Migrate · Rekord Buddy to Rekordbox

Move from Rekord Buddy to Rekordbox.

Rekord Buddy is not maintained any more, so a Serato or Traktor library gets into Rekordbox through Rekordbox's own rekordbox xml Imported Library instead, fed by a tool that is still updated. Here is exactly what carries across, what gets lost, and how to bring your whole library over without starting from scratch.

A DJ library organized in Vibes with BPM, key, and vibe tags intact after moving from Rekord Buddy to Rekordbox

Bring your collection across without losing your work.

Rekord Buddy 2 was the app Mac DJs used to shuttle collections between Serato, Traktor, and Rekordbox. What is left of it is an unmaintained open-source code dump: the public repository was last updated in June 2022, its README warns the code most likely will not build at all, and none of it was written for Rekordbox 7 or Serato DJ Pro 4. The route that still works is the one Rekordbox documents itself, fed by a tool somebody is still updating.

What transfers from Rekord Buddy to Rekordbox.

CapabilityCarriesWhat happens
Audio filesThe files never pass through a converter. Import them with File, then Import, then Import Track or Import Folder, or from a USB drive under Devices.
PlaylistsA library tool rebuilds them in the rekordbox xml tree and you drag them under Playlists. Plain playlist files in M3U, M3U8, or PLS import on their own.
Key & BPMRekordbox analyzes both itself, so the values are right even when nothing carries. For Camelot lettering, set Preferences, View, Display Type, Key display format to Alphanumeric.
Hot cuesCues only survive if the tool you use writes them into the xml. Rekordbox stores hot cues and memory cues per track, and how many a player calls up depends on the DJ equipment.
BeatgridsGrids can travel in the rekordbox xml format, which has its own beatgrid option. Anything that does not arrive is rebuilt by Rekordbox's analysis, so check a sample against the waveform.
Star ratingsRatings depend entirely on the tool writing them. Nothing in Rekordbox reaches into a Serato or Traktor library to fetch them, so expect to re-rate some tracks.
Comments & tagsComments saved in the file tags travel with the files: Rekordbox reads ID3 on MP3 and AIFF, meta tags on M4A, RIFF INFO on WAVE, and Vorbis Comment on FLAC. My Tag is separate and starts empty.

Using a maintained library tool plus Rekordbox's rekordbox xml Imported Library. A drag-and-drop rebuild carries the audio and nothing else. Rekordbox has no importer for another DJ app: its documented sources are files and folders, playlist files, an iTunes library, and a rekordbox xml library.

Moving from Rekord Buddy to Rekordbox, step by step.

Rekordbox will not open a Serato crate or a Traktor collection. Its documented library sources are music files and folders, playlist files in M3U, M3U8, or PLS, an iTunes library, and a rekordbox xml library. So the job people used to hand to Rekord Buddy, Serato to Rekordbox, now splits in two: get the audio in, then feed Rekordbox an xml.

01

Get the audio files into Rekordbox

Choose Import from the File menu, then Import Track for single files or Import Folder for a whole folder. Tracks land in your Collection and their tag information is read in, and analysis starts straight away when Auto Analysis is on. If your music sits on a USB drive exported by another computer, right-click the playlist or folder under Devices and choose Import Playlist or Import Folder instead. Rekordbox loads MP3, AAC, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, and FLAC.

02

Read your old library with a maintained tool

Rekordbox cannot read another DJ app's library, so a library tool does the translation. Point it at the collection you still have, Serato, Traktor, Engine DJ, or an older Rekordbox database, and let it read the playlists, cues, grids, and comments. Check that the tool names the versions you actually run, Rekordbox 7, Serato DJ Pro 4, Traktor Pro 4, or Engine DJ 5, because the abandoned converters stopped naming anything years ago.

03

Connect the xml in Rekordbox

Export a rekordbox xml file from the tool. In Rekordbox, open Preferences, go to Advanced, then Database, and set Imported Library under rekordbox xml to that file. If the rekordbox xml tree does not appear in the browser, open Preferences, go to View, then Layout, and tick rekordbox xml under Media Browser.

04

Pull the playlists in and verify

Double-click rekordbox xml in the tree view, then Playlists, and drag the playlists you want under your own Playlists. Tracks dragged from All Tracks land in your Collection. Then check the work: play a few tracks, look at the grids, confirm no file is missing, and export a USB stick and listen on the gear before you trust the library in a booth.

The xml is a window, not a merge: nothing is really yours until you drag it into your Collection and Playlists, and My Tag is Rekordbox's own system that no documented xml field fills, so plan to rebuild it from your comments. Accept too that the two-way habit is gone. The old Rekord Buddy Traktor to Rekordbox sync was built for app versions that are several major releases behind, so a round trip is not something to plan a library around any more.

The cleaner path

One library, every app.

Vibes reads the library you still have. Point it at your rekordbox, Serato, Traktor, or Engine DJ collection, or at plain folders, and Smart Import works out which app it came from. It analyzes BPM, key, energy, and track sections, lets you tag tracks into vibes by hand or with Auto-Tagging, and exports playlists and vibes back to rekordbox as a folder tree, with optional Camelot key or BPM sub-folders. It works on the files you own, not on streaming libraries, and it is not a DJ app: the playing still happens in Rekordbox.

Import from rekordbox, Serato, Traktor, Engine DJ, or plain folders, with Smart Import detecting the app
Analyze BPM, key in Camelot, musical or Open Key display, energy curve, and track sections
Tag tracks into vibes by hand with Vibe Sort, by combination, or with Auto-Tagging AI
Export playlists and vibes back to rekordbox as a folder tree, with optional key or BPM sub-folders

Organize once, export to Rekordbox.

Your playlists, tags, ratings, and cue points travel to the gear you play on, so nothing you do in Vibes is locked away.

Frequently asked questions

The honest answers, including the trade-offs.

Yes, in the sense that nobody sells it any more. What survives are community copies of the source on GitHub, released under the GNU GPL v3. The public repository was last updated in June 2022, its README calls the code a dump that will most likely not build easily or at all, and the build notes are macOS only. Free, but there is no supported download and nobody is maintaining it.
It was built to. The open-source code still contains collection readers for Rekordbox, Serato, Traktor, Engine, and Apple Music, and Rekord Buddy 2 Serato to Rekordbox transfers were its main job. What it cannot do is keep up. Those readers were written for library formats several major versions ago, so whatever it writes today is unverified against Rekordbox 7. Treat it as a research project, not a migration plan.
Select Import from the File menu, then Import Track to pick single files or Import Folder to pick a whole folder. Tracks land in your Collection and their tag information is read in. Existing playlist files come in through File, Import, Import Playlist, which accepts M3U, M3U8, and PLS. For music on a USB drive exported by another computer, right-click it under Devices and choose Import Playlist or Import Folder.
Same story, different door. The old Rekord Buddy Rekordbox to Serato and Rekord Buddy 2 Rekordbox to Traktor routes are just as unmaintained, and Serato documents only your own files and folders and an iTunes or Music library as sources, nothing from another DJ app. Those moves need a current library tool too. We cover the Serato direction in Rekord Buddy to Serato, and a live Serato library starts at Serato to Rekordbox.
