What people actually mean by a key finder.

The searches around this topic collide badly, so it is worth separating the tools. A key finder for DJs analyzes a folder of audio and reports the musical key of every track in it. A pitch detector is a different instrument: it reports the frequency of one note at a time, and a vocal pitch detector does the same for a sung line, which is a tuning job rather than a library job. A vocal key finder sits in between and guesses the key of an acapella from its melody.

Then there is the name collision. Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder, and every product key finder windows 10 utility like it, reads Windows and Office license keys out of the registry. Nothing musical happens in either one. If a result promises to recover a license, you are on the wrong page.

Among the music tools the real split is local against web. A song keyfinder or keyfinder online service either looks the track up in a database or analyzes one file you upload, and returns a single result: fine for checking one track, useless for four thousand. Queries like keyfinder music and keyfinder download usually want the opposite, a desktop tool that batch-analyzes a library offline. That is the open source option above, or Mixxx if you are on Windows or Linux.

The original is several products now, which is why a straight swap rarely exists. The desktop app sits at Mixed In Key 11, with a Pro tier that adds mashup suggestions, deck players, and stem separation, and Mixed In Key Live is a separate purchase that reads key and BPM off whatever is playing on your computer. Does it write into the file?

This is the difference between a key you can move and a key you rent. Rekordbox can store the detected key in the ID3 tag, and Serato's Set Key writes a key value during analysis. Keyfinder software that only paints a result on screen leaves you retyping it into your library by hand.

Key only, or key plus energy?

Key detection is a solved problem and close to free. Energy, the 1 to 10 rating that decides running order, is the part the free options skip. If you only ever read the letter and the number, a keyfinder app covers it. If you built sets off the energy column, replace that too or the switch will hurt.

Standalone, plugin, or built in?

A standalone analyzer scans a folder and gets out of the way. A keyfinder plugin lives inside a DAW and reads whatever is loaded, which is what Mixed In Key Studio Edition does as a VST and AU. Built-in detection costs nothing extra but stays in that app's database unless tag writing is on.

Three work well. Mixxx is a free, GPL-licensed DJ app whose key detector is built on the KeyFinder algorithm. KeyFinder itself is free on the Mac App Store and does nothing but batch key estimation. And the analysis inside Rekordbox, Serato DJ Pro, Traktor Pro 4, and Engine DJ is already paid for. A Mixed In Key free alternative for the energy rating, though, does not really exist. It depends which of its jobs you actually use. For key alone, probably not: your DJ app detects key during analysis and can write it into the file, and KeyFinder's author publishes an accuracy comparison putting the open source algorithm in the same league as paid tools. For the energy rating, the mashup ideas, and the cue point sets, it still does things the free options do not. Buy it for those, not for the key column. We put it side by side with Vibes too.
The desktop app is on version 11, sold as a standard edition and a Pro edition; Pro adds mashup suggestions, deck players for testing transitions, stem separation, pitch shifting, and idea filters.
