WAV / AIFF

Uncompressed lossless audio formats storing raw PCM audio at full quality with no codec overhead.

WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) and AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) are uncompressed audio containers that store raw PCM audio data with no encoding step, making them the closest digital equivalent to the original recording. WAV is the standard on Windows and in most pro audio workflows; AIFF is Apple's equivalent and carries identical audio quality.

Why it matters

Both formats are universally supported on CDJs, standalone players, and DJ software without any decoding overhead, making them the safest choice for USB preparation. Because no compression is applied, there are no codec artifacts under heavy EQ or effects processing.

Frequently asked questions

They are functionally identical in audio quality. Both store uncompressed PCM audio, WAV is the standard on Windows and most DJ software, while AIFF originated on Mac. You can use either without any sonic difference.

Not strictly required, but WAV or AIFF is the professional standard because there is no compression artifacts and no decoding overhead. High-bitrate MP3 (320 kbps) is acceptable in a live club context, but WAV gives you headroom for heavy EQ and effects without audible degradation.

MP3 is a lossy compressed format that discards audio data to shrink file size, while WAV retains every sample at full resolution. A 5-minute track is roughly 50 MB as WAV and under 10 MB as a 320 kbps MP3. The tradeoff is storage space versus audio fidelity, especially noticeable on club systems at high volume.
