Audio encoded in a format that preserves all original PCM data with no quality reduction, as opposed to lossy formats like MP3.
Lossless audio refers to any audio format (WAV, AIFF, FLAC) where the encoding process discards no audio data, meaning the decoded file is bit-for-bit identical to the original recording. This is distinct from lossy formats such as MP3 or AAC, which permanently remove frequency information to reduce file size.
Why it matters
For DJing, lossless files hold up better when processed through EQ, effects, and amplification chains. Artifacts from lossy compression become more audible on a club system at volume, particularly in the high end.
