Stems

Reviewed by

Isolated components of a track (vocals, drums, bass, melody) as separate files or AI-extracted, enabling element-level mixing and remixing.

Stems are isolated audio components of a finished track, typically split into vocals, drums, bass, and melody. They can be provided by the label as separate files or generated from a mixed-down track using AI source-separation tools.

Why it matters

Stems let a DJ blend only the vocal of one track over the full arrangement of another, swap basslines cleanly, or remove a clashing element during a transition, which is not possible with a standard stereo file.

Frequently asked questions

A full track is the mixed-down audio. Stems are the individual components, typically vocals, drums, bass, and melody, split into separate files or layers. DJing with stems lets you blend just the drums from one track with the vocal from another, something impossible with a standard two-channel mix.
Both options exist. Some labels and producers release official stems alongside the main release. AI separation tools can extract stems from any stereo file, though quality depends on the complexity of the track. Official stems are cleaner because they come from the original session sessions rather than algorithmic separation.
Native Instruments Traktor Pro has supported its own proprietary Stems format since 2015. Rekordbox and Serato have added real-time AI stem separation, splitting tracks into layers on the fly without needing separate files. Real-time separation is convenient but more CPU-intensive than pre-rendered stems files.

Hey, it's Ben Modigell 👋

I DJ and produce as so I so — downtempo, minimal, dub house, tech house, and techno (releases on Spotify and SoundCloud, links above). Everything I write here comes from my own gigs, studio sessions, and library cleanups: the rules I follow, the failure modes I've actually hit, and the workflow I use when nobody's watching. If a technique didn't earn its place in my own sets, it doesn't make it into a tutorial.
