Lists that maintain themselves from your own rules.

Building a Smartlist in Traktor.

Smartlists are Traktor's rule-based playlists. You set conditions and Traktor keeps the list populated automatically.

01

Create the Smartlist

Right-click the Playlists node in the collection browser and choose Create Smartlist. A configuration window opens where you name the list and start building your rules.

02

Add conditions

Add up to 8 conditions on fields like BPM, key, genre, artist, album, comment, content type, or file path, with operators like contains, is, starts with, and ends with for text, and a forgiving around operator for BPM, which admits a track sitting a couple of beats off your target. Then set the global logic: all conditions must match, or any one of them. You cannot mix AND and OR within a single Smartlist.

03

Make it specific

Stack conditions to express a real idea, for example BPM 124 to 128 and comment contains energy4, so the list is exactly what you want.

04

Let it auto-populate

As matching tracks enter your collection, the Smartlist updates itself, so it stays current with no manual upkeep. Two limits to know: Smartlists only see tracks that are actually in your Track Collection, so anything living only under the iTunes node is invisible to them, and a Smartlist cannot be dragged into a custom order; convert it to a regular playlist when the running order starts to matter.

The catch

Smartlist conditions can only filter on existing metadata. If tracks are not tagged for energy, mood, or role, the rules fall back to BPM, key, and genre. Also note that combining AND and OR logic in a single Smartlist is not supported natively; each Smartlist uses one global operator (match all or match any).

The faster way

Feed the rules richer data.

Vibes auto-tags energy, mood, and role from the audio, then exports them back into Traktor, so your Smartlist conditions finally have meaningful attributes to filter on.

Frequently asked questions

The honest answers, including the trade-offs.

A Smartlist is a rule-based playlist. You set conditions like BPM range, key, or comment, and Traktor keeps it populated with matching tracks automatically as your collection changes.
Because they can only filter on metadata that exists. Without energy, mood, or role tags, the conditions fall back to BPM, key, and genre. Vibes can auto-tag those and export them into Traktor.
Yes. Vibes auto-tags from the audio and exports the tags back into Traktor, so Smartlist conditions can filter on real energy, mood, and role data.
Because Smartlists only evaluate tracks inside the Track Collection. The iTunes node is a read-only window into your Music library, not part of the collection, so import those tracks into Traktor's own playlists first and the rules will start seeing them.
