Learn to use Serato DJ.

To use Serato DJ, install the software, plug in a supported controller to unlock it, drag your music folders onto the All icon in the crate panel, run Analyze Files, then load a track to each deck and mix. Serato DJ Lite is free and Serato DJ Pro is the paid tier, but both read the same library and the same files, so nothing you organize on day one is wasted later.

Get started in Serato DJ, step by step.

This is the first session in order, and most of it is identical in both editions. The app name gets written the other way round a lot, so if you searched for how to use DJ Serato, these are still the steps you want.

Download and install the software

Get the current installer from serato.com. On macOS, open the .pkg, accept the license agreement, and click Install. On Windows, extract the .zip and run the installer inside it. You do not need to buy anything to use Serato DJ software on day one, and you can use Serato DJ Lite for as long as you like without paying.

Connect a controller, or open Practice mode

Plug your controller into a USB port before you launch the app, so Serato detects it on start. With nothing connected you can still use Serato DJ Pro without controller hardware: the Offline player and Practice mode give you two decks driven by mouse and keyboard. Serato Play, a paid expansion pack, adds a full mixer panel so you can use Serato DJ Pro on laptop audio alone.

Import your music

Click the Files button to open the browser panel, find your music folder, and drag it onto the All icon at the top of the crates panel, the purple one in Serato DJ Lite. Serato references files where they already sit, it does not copy them. Record pool downloads are no different: to use BPM Supreme with Serato DJ, download the tracks to a folder first, then import that folder.

Analyze your files

Disconnect your hardware so the Analyze Files button appears above the library, then click it. Serato builds the waveform overviews, flags problem files, and writes BPM, beatgrid, and key when those boxes are ticked in Analysis Settings. Set the BPM Range to match your music so tracks do not land at half or double tempo.

Load a track and learn the deck

Drag a track onto a virtual deck, or press shift and the left arrow to load deck one. Play it, watch the waveform, and set a cue point on the first beat you would actually drop. Track gain, the pitch slider, and the deck info area all sit around the waveform, and what you set is stored with the track.

Beatmatch first, then reach for Sync

Match tempo by hand with the pitch slider and the jog wheel before you automate it. When you want the shortcut, open Setup, then Sync Preferences, and pick Simple Sync or Smart Sync. To use Sync in Serato DJ Pro, press SYNC on the deck you want to follow: it matches the BPM and snaps the transients to the other deck.

Link a streaming service, or skip it

Streaming lives under Setup, Library + Display, Music Streaming. Turn on Show Streaming Services and each service needs its own paid account: to use Tidal on Serato DJ Lite you need a Tidal DJ subscription, and to use SoundCloud on Serato DJ Lite you need SoundCloud Go+. Streamed tracks need a live connection, so local files stay the safer bet for a paid gig.

Build crates and back up before the gig

Click Add Crate and drag tracks in. A track can sit in as many crates as you want, and dropping one crate onto another makes a subcrate. Before a gig, copy the music drive together with the _Serato_ folder that lives on it. Serato reads the library from the drive the music is on, so the two travel together.

The catch

Serato has no export-to-USB step like rekordbox. The library lives on the drive with your files, so playing off someone else's laptop means bringing that drive and finding Serato installed on the machine you plug into.

Four things. A Mac or Windows laptop that meets Serato's published specs, including a CPU with AVX support. The installer from serato.com. Music files on a drive, or a linked streaming account. And hardware, if you want to mix properly: plug in a supported controller and you can use Numark Party Mix with Serato DJ Lite the moment it is connected, with no activation step.
It reads your music where it already lives instead of importing copies, and stores the analysis in the file tags and in a _Serato_ folder on the same drive. Connected hardware unlocks the software and drives the virtual decks. Expansion packs add the rest: if you want to use Pitch 'n Time, Serato DJ keeps it under Setup, Expansion Packs, where it replaces the standard keylock and adds Key Shift and Key Sync.
Analyze new tracks before the gig, never mid-set. Name crates for how you pull from them, not by genre alone. Learn to beatmatch by ear before you lean on Sync. To use Stems on Serato DJ Pro, load a track and click the Acapella or Instrumental button in the deck area. Before you use Stems, Serato DJ Pro has to separate the audio, so prepare the heavy tracks in the Stems crate first.
Not for the library work. Practice mode runs with nothing plugged in and gives you two decks, a crossfader, and keyboard control, which is enough for importing, analyzing, and setting cue points. For real mixing you do, because on entry gear the controller is also the license key. If you want to use Pioneer DJ, Serato-ready boards such as the DDJ-SB3 unlock Lite the moment they are connected.
There is no single best one, only the right license tier, so read the badge on Serato's hardware page first. Pro hardware unlocked devices need no license at all. Lite unlocked devices need a paid upgrade, and if you plan to use Pioneer DDJ-SB3 Serato DJ controller hardware, that is the tier you are in. If you already use Serato, Pioneer DJ and Numark cover most of the entry range.
Partly. Serato DJ Lite costs nothing and unlocks automatically with supported hardware. To use Serato DJ Pro you need a purchased license or a subscription, though Serato lets you try Pro free for fourteen days with a supported controller connected. The honest route is to use Serato DJ Lite for beginners' first months, then upgrade when a feature you actually need turns up greyed out.
Lite costs nothing. Pro is sold on Serato's store as either a one-off license or a subscription, and the current figures live there, so check the store rather than an old forum post. Hardware does not change the tier: to use DDJ-SB3 with Serato DJ Pro, or to use Numark Party Mix with Serato DJ Pro, you buy the same upgrade, because both are Lite unlocked devices.
Yes, in current versions. Serato added it as a music streaming provider, and it needs a Premium account plus a recent build of the software. You link it under Setup, Library + Display, Music Streaming, the same place as the other services. As with any streamed track, playback needs a live internet connection, so keep local files for anything that has to be reliable.
Mostly hardware and habit. Serato's licensing puts the software on the controller: many boards unlock Lite or Pro the moment they are connected, so it is already there when the box is opened. The analysis is written into the files and the drive they sit on, so a whole library moves with a drive, which is also why backing it up is a copy job rather than an export job.
Because they belong to Pro. Serato greys out anything the Lite tier does not include and shows an upgrade message when you hover, which catches out beginners following a Pro tutorial. Recording, DVS, and the expansion packs all sit on the Pro side. Buying the upgrade unlocks them on the same hardware and the same library, and your crates stay exactly as they are.
