Get Mixed In Key results into Serato DJ.

Mixed In Key and Serato DJ Pro pass data through the track's own tags: analyze in Mixed In Key, keep Serato's Set Key option unticked so it cannot overwrite the result, then click Rescan ID3 Tags in Serato's Files panel. Rescanning tags beats re-analyzing, because Serato's own note warns that re-analysis overwrites any manual changes made. The detail most guides skip: Mixed In Key analyzes .wav files but does not tag them, so those tracks come back empty.

Serato does not import from Mixed In Key directly. The two apps meet in the file: Mixed In Key writes key, energy, and cue points into the tags, and Serato reads them back.

Turn off Set Key in Serato's analysis settings

Open Serato DJ Pro and go to the analysis settings that sit with the Analyze Files button in the top left corner of the library. Untick Set Key so Serato stops calculating a key value of its own, and leave Analyze BPM / Beatgrid ticked. Serato's own note is blunt: re-analyzing with these options checked overwrites any manual changes made.

Analyze the files in Serato first

Drag individual folders, crates, or files onto the Analyze Files button, or in Serato DJ 4.0 right-click a selection and choose Analyze Files. This builds the beatgrid that the imported cue points later snap to. On Serato DJ Pro 3.3.5 or earlier you have to disconnect your DJ hardware before analyzing; newer versions do not ask for it.

Run the same tracks through Mixed In Key

Add the files to Mixed In Key and let it analyze key, energy, and cue points. Check the format list first: the vendor marks .wav as analyzed but not tagged, and notes that Serato does not support the key field in .mp4. Files in those formats stay empty in Serato no matter how often you rescan.

Set the tag options before you retag

In Mixed In Key, open Settings and find Update Tags. Switch on Key + Energy, save it Before Comments, and tick the Initial Key checkbox, which is the setting that fills Serato's Key column. If the files were analyzed before you changed any of this, click Retag existing files so the old results get rewritten.

Export the cue points to Serato

Still in Settings, open Export Cue Points, confirm that Serato is checked, and pick the option that lets Mixed In Key overwrite existing cue points. Then select your tracks, right-click, and click Export Cue Points. Mixed In Key can set up to eight cue points per track and snaps them to Serato's beatgrid.

Rescan ID3 tags and read the Key column

Back in Serato, open the Files panel and click Rescan ID3 Tags, which re-reads file tags across the library after they were edited elsewhere. The Comments column then carries the Camelot code and the energy level. A Mixed In Key code such as 8A means position 8 on the wheel, with A for minor and B for major. Pick the notation you prefer under Setup, Library + Display.

The catch

Mixed In Key only ever writes into the file, so any format it cannot tag stays empty in Serato, and a later re-analysis can wipe what it did write. To pin a track down, control + click the empty Status column for the blue lock icon: Serato states that locked files will not have a new Key calculated.

The honest answers, including the trade-offs.

They are not competing for the same job. Serato analyzes on import and plays the set; the other app only analyzes, then writes key, energy, and cue points into your files. The real Mixed In Key vs Serato question is whose key detection you trust, and the honest answer is that a dedicated analyzer earns its place only if you mix harmonically. If you do not, Serato's built-in Set Key is enough.
Mostly DJs who mix harmonically and want one key reading across every app they touch. It shows up a lot in house, techno, trance, and open-format prep, where long blends make a clashing key obvious within a bar. It is not standard equipment: plenty of working DJs never analyze key at all and pick by ear and energy instead. Treat vendor artist lists as marketing, not proof.
It helps, and it is not a rule. Harmonic mixing hands you a shortlist of tracks that will not clash over a long blend, which matters most where two records overlap for a minute or more. Short cuts, quick doubles, and drop swaps rarely need it. Use key as a filter, not a cage, and let energy and phrasing decide the rest. Serato can sort a crate by key so the filter is one click away.
It is worth it if you mix harmonically across more than one app and want one consistent reading in all of them. If you only run Serato and rarely blend long, the built-in analysis already covers you. The question underneath is usually is Mixed In Key free, and the answer is no: the vendor sells it with a 30-day money-back guarantee rather than a free tier. We do not quote the Mixed In Key 11 Pro price here, because it moves with sales.
The current release, if you have the choice. The steps above are written against it, and older builds may label the panels differently, so check your own Settings window before you follow along. If you are running Mixed In Key 8, or working from a Mixed In Key 10 review you found online, expect the names to drift. Mixed In Key 11 Pro system requirements sit on the vendor's Pro FAQ, which lists macOS 12.7.6 Monterey and up, or Windows 10 or higher.
Per the vendor's Pro FAQ, it adds mashup idea suggestions, deck players for testing transitions, and mixout ideas on top of the analysis. Those are creative tools. The vendor's Serato integration page still documents one route in and out of Serato, the Update Tags and Export Cue Points panels described above. A Mixed In Key 11 Pro review or a Mixed In Key 11 Pro Reddit thread will tell you more about the mashup tools than about that handoff.
Almost always old data or the wrong tag option. Serato keeps showing the previous key detection until it re-reads the file, so open Settings, Update Tags, switch on Key + Energy with the Initial Key checkbox ticked, and click Retag existing files. Then click Rescan ID3 Tags in Serato's Files panel. If the field is still blank, check the format: .wav gets analyzed but never tagged. If the notation looks wrong rather than missing, that is a display setting: show Camelot key in Serato.
Open Settings, Export Cue Points and confirm two things: Serato is checked, and the overwrite option is selected so it is allowed to replace what is already on the track. Then run Export Cue Points for existing files. The cue points show up once you load the track onto a Serato deck, not while it is sitting in the crate list.
Partly. The tag half is the same idea, but the vendor's Rekordbox integration page documents key and energy only, and tells you to right-click your files and choose Reload Tags. For Mixed In Key cue points, Rekordbox is not covered on that page at all. Mixed In Key cue points not showing in Rekordbox is a separate problem with a separate fix, and the Rekordbox guide walks through it. There are matching guides for Traktor and Engine DJ.
Habit and hardware, mostly. Serato ships bundled with controllers and mixers, the crate and Smart Crate library model is quick to learn, and in Serato DJ 4.0 analysis on import is on by default. For a lot of DJs the software arrived with the gear and never got replaced. That is a preference, not a verdict: rekordbox, Traktor, and Engine DJ all do the same core job.
