The best free DJ software, and what each free tier actually costs you.
Mixxx is the only option that is free with no conditions attached: open source on Windows, macOS and Linux, no account, BPM and key detection, and controller mapping built in. The other three are free with a catch the roundups skip, because VirtualDJ is free only while you never plug in a controller or mixer, the rekordbox Free plan unlocks Performance mode only with Hardware Unlock eligible equipment, and Serato DJ Lite keeps quantize, saved loops, beat jumping and set recording behind Pro.

The app is free. The library work is the same in all of them.
The free options, compared.
Four apps cover almost every honest answer to what is the best DJ software for beginners who do not want to pay: Mixxx, VirtualDJ, rekordbox and Serato DJ Lite. Each is free in a different way, so the useful question is not which is best, but which free tier stops you first.
| Option | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| MixxxBest for A complete free app with nothing held back for later |
|
|
Our verdict The only one of the four where free is the whole product. Version 2.5.6 shipped in March 2026, and nothing in it is a trial for something you buy later. | ||
| VirtualDJBest for Practicing on a laptop with keyboard and mouse only |
|
|
Our verdict Free here means keyboard and mouse. That is genuinely enough to learn on, and it is the tier most comparison charts describe wrongly. | ||
| rekordboxBest for Anyone heading toward club CDJs or Pioneer DJ gear |
|
|
| Serato DJ LiteBest for Starting out on a controller that ships with Serato support |
|
|
| At a glance | Pricing | Model | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mixxx | Free | Open source, no account | Windows, macOS, Linux |
| VirtualDJ | Free without a controller; Home $4 per month, Pro $19 per month | Free tier or subscription | Windows, macOS |
| rekordbox | Free plan; paid plans about 10 to 30 euros a month billed yearly | Freemium subscription | Windows, macOS, iOS, Android |
| Serato DJ Lite | Free; Serato DJ Pro sold separately | Free tier of a paid app | macOS, Windows |
How we compared these.
We checked each claim against the vendor's own pricing, download and support pages in August 2026, not against other roundups. Lists titled best DJ software 2025 are still circulating with tiers that have moved since: VirtualDJ is now on its 2026 build, rekordbox is on 7.2.18, Mixxx on 2.5.6 and Serato DJ Lite on 4.0.9.
The searches split into two groups that want the same thing. Someone typing best free DJ software PC wants something that runs on a Windows laptop tonight, and someone typing good DJ software for PC free is asking the same question with less trust in the answer. Both land in the same place: Mixxx when there is no controller and no budget, the vendor free tier when the controller is already bought.
We did not rank on feature counts. The best beginner DJ program is the one whose free tier does not stop you in week three, and the best DJ mixing software for beginners is usually whichever one the hardware you own already unlocks.
What actually decides it.
Controller or no controller
That one question, which DJ software is best for beginners, usually comes down to whether there is hardware on the desk. With no controller, Mixxx and VirtualDJ are free and complete. With one, the app your controller unlocks is free and the others charge.
What the free tier withholds
Searching for the best DJ program free of charge turns up the same four names, and the difference is what each one holds back: cue point count, saved loops, recording, or mixing itself until hardware is attached.
How steep the first week is
An easy DJ software for beginners free of cost still has to teach you beatmatching, gain and phrasing. Look for a clear waveform, a visible beat grid and sync you can switch off once you no longer need it.
Where your library ends up
Every top DJ software keeps its own library database, and none of them reads another's. Switching apps later means your playlists, cues and ratings have to be carried across, so keep the tags and analysis somewhere you control.
One organized library, every app.
Vibes imports from and exports to Rekordbox, Serato, Traktor, and Engine DJ, so the software you pick is never a lock-in.

Methodology
How we keep this honest.
Verified against the source
Every claim about each app is checked against its official site and current pricing.
We own our bias
We make Vibes, a library tool, not DJ mixing software. The picks above are independent, and we recommend the app that fits you, not the one paired with us.
Live pricing
The Vibes price shown comes straight from our checkout, never a hardcoded marketing number.
