How we compared, and why old lists mislead.

Every tool here was checked on its own site in August 2026: what it says it detects, where the result goes, and what it costs. Nothing is listed on reputation alone. Accuracy percentages quoted around the web come from one person's test set on one collection of music, not from a shared benchmark, so we do not repeat them as if they were specifications.

Much of the advice still circulating is old. When two tracks fight despite matching codes, the detection was probably wrong on one of them, so fix that track by hand and move on. The Camelot wheel shows which codes belong together.
Free options exist, but they are thinner than the paid ones. A search for a key detector plugin free download, or for a key detector vst free, mostly turns up trial versions and bundle offers.
