Fix BPM and beatgrids in Serato.

A wrong BPM or a drifting beatgrid makes sync and quantized cues misbehave. The fix lives in Serato's Edit Grid mode: mark the downbeat, stretch or slip the grid until the markers sit on the beats, and double or halve a tempo that was read at half speed. That is how to fix BPM in Serato track by track, and there is a faster way to get accurate BPM across a whole library.

Serato's Edit Grid mode lets you set the downbeat marker and stretch, contract, or slip the grid so it lines up with the track.

Enable the grid editor

The Edit Grid button only appears under two conditions: you have Smart Sync enabled, or you have Simple Sync enabled with Snap to Beatgrid also turned on. Enable one of those combinations under Setup > DJ Preferences > Sync Mode before you proceed; with Sync Off the button will not appear.

Enter Edit Grid

Click the Edit Grid button, which appears next to the time elapsed/remaining display on the deck with the track loaded. You can also press Alt + Spacebar (Option + Spacebar on a Mac; press it twice to target the right-hand Virtual Deck). This opens the Beatgrid Editor, and a blue bar appears above the waveform.

Set the downbeat

If the track already has an incorrect auto-analyzed beatgrid, click CLEAR first to remove the marker closest to the playhead (Shift + Delete clears the whole grid). Then move the playhead close to the first downbeat transient (kick or bass hit at bar one) and click SET, or press X. The Downbeat Marker snaps to the closest transient, so you do not need to be pixel-precise. The marker then sits on the waveform showing where bar one starts.

Adjust the grid to the track

Use the small and large ADJUST arrows to contract or stretch the grid from your last Downbeat or Bar Marker so the markers stay in phase across the track; adjusting changes the calculated BPM. If the grid is the right width but sits slightly early or late, use SLIP to shift the whole grid without changing the calculated BPM. Skip forward to a breakdown and the outro to confirm the markers still land on the beats.

Change or double the BPM value

If the BPM reads half or double the correct value, fix it from the library: double-click the BPM field for the track and press Alt + Up Arrow to double the value or Alt + Down Arrow to halve it. Serato adjusts the beatgrid to match, and this works on several selected tracks at once. To set a tempo you already know, double-click the same field and type it. Then open Edit Grid, check the markers, and click SAVE (or press Return) to keep the changes; Esc leaves the editor without saving.

The catch

Grid editing is precise but manual and per track. The Edit Grid button is hidden unless Smart Sync is enabled, or Simple Sync is enabled with Snap to Beatgrid also turned on (Simple Sync alone is not enough). For tracks with an incorrect auto-analyzed grid, remember to click CLEAR before placing a new downbeat with SET, click SAVE rather than Esc when you are done, and expect tracks with real tempo changes to need more than one Beat Warp Marker.

Edit Grid only shows when a Sync or Snap option is enabled in the DJ preferences. Go to Setup > DJ Preferences > Sync Mode and turn on Smart Sync, or turn on Simple Sync together with Snap to Beatgrid. With Sync Off the button stays hidden no matter which track is loaded. Once enabled, the button appears on the deck next to the time display, and Alt + Spacebar opens the editor from the keyboard. When the tempo is in doubt and you want a second opinion that owes nothing to Serato DJ's analysis, tap it out and compare the two numbers.
Serato's documented shortcut works from the library rather than the grid panel: double-click the BPM field for the track and press Alt + Up Arrow to double the value, or Alt + Down Arrow to halve it. Serato adjusts the beatgrid to the new tempo, and the shortcut works on several selected files at once. This is the usual fix for drum and bass, footwork, and half-time trap, where the analyzer lands on the wrong multiple. Then open Edit Grid and check the markers.
Serato lets you edit track metadata straight from the library: double-click the BPM field for the track and type the tempo you know is correct, for example 128.00. Then open Edit Grid on that deck, set the downbeat with SET, and use the ADJUST arrows to stretch or contract the grid until the markers sit on the beats. The grid is laid out from the BPM value, so check the markers on the deck afterwards, then click SAVE.
