Why Fades Matter

A hard cut at the start or end of a file reads as a click or a jarring jump, so DJs and editors reach for a fade constantly: closing out a radio edit so it does not just stop, smoothing the tail of a loop so it repeats without a seam, softening the start of a podcast bed under a voice, or masking an edit point inside a longer set recording. The duration and curve you choose change how obvious the fade is; a short, well-chosen fade is often invisible to the listener, which is the goal.

Picking a Curve

Equal power tapers with a cosine curve rather than a straight line, so the signal's perceived loudness falls more evenly across the fade, this is the standard choice for music and the default here. Linear ramps gain in a straight line from full to zero (or the reverse); it sounds slightly front-loaded on music but is a clean, predictable choice for speech, where an even, mechanical fade is easy to place under a voice without drawing attention. Exponential stays close to full volume for most of the fade and then drops away quickly at the very end, useful for reverb tails, drones, or any sustained sound you want to hold before it disappears rather than tapering the whole way through.

A Fade Is a Destructive Edit

Being direct about this: once you apply a fade and export, the gain change is baked into the samples permanently, there is no undo inside the downloaded file.
