VIP Mix

Reviewed by

A producer's own special version of their track, often reworked for the dancefloor.

A VIP (Variation In Production) mix is an artist's own alternate take on one of their tracks, frequently a harder or more club-focused version made for their sets.

Why it matters

VIP mixes are sought-after because they are rarer and punchier than the original, often functioning as exclusive set weapons.

Frequently asked questions

VIP stands for 'Very Important Person' and originally referred to exclusive versions sent only to top DJs before a record was released. Today the term is used more loosely by producers to mean any alternate version of their own track, usually harder, darker, or differently arranged from the original.
A VIP mix is always made by the original producer, not an outside artist. It is their own reinterpretation of their own work. A remix is typically handed off to a different producer or DJ. Because the VIP comes from the same source, it often shares stems and core elements with the original but reshapes them significantly.
VIPs extend the commercial and DJ life of a track. A record that peaked months ago can get a second run on dancefloors with a fresh arrangement. They also give producers a way to offer a harder or more floor-focused version without replacing the original, which may have had radio or streaming success.

Hey, it's Ben Modigell 👋

I DJ and produce as so I so — downtempo, minimal, dub house, tech house, and techno (releases on Spotify and SoundCloud, links above). Everything I write here comes from my own gigs, studio sessions, and library cleanups: the rules I follow, the failure modes I've actually hit, and the workflow I use when nobody's watching. If a technique didn't earn its place in my own sets, it doesn't make it into a tutorial.
